BACKGROUND

Empowering a science first marketplace to scale globally

DABOS is a fast‑growing B2B marketplace that aggregates science, biotech, medical, biochemical, chemical, and pharmacological supplies into one enormous digital catalog. Its promise—“where innovation is equipped”—relies on giving research laboratories and manufacturers instant, one‑stop access to more than two million highly specialized SKUs drawn from both renowned brands and niche labels.
Until recently, however, DABOS managed supplier data by juggling hundreds of Excel files e‑mailed in wildly different formats. Pricing errors, outdated stock levels, and sheer data‑entry fatigue created costly delays every time a customer order had to be cross‑checked against multiple spreadsheets.

To stay price‑competitive and maintain an exceptional vendor experience, DABOS set out to build a cloud‑native Supplier Platform that would:

  • Let manufacturers, distributors, and resellers self‑onboard and upload product catalogs in bulk.
  • Validate every upload automatically, flagging missing attributes before it reached an approver.
  • Give DABOS staff an approval workflow and a single, always‑current view of price and availability.
  • Feed cleansed data back into DABOS’s core ordering system in near real time.
CHALLENGE

Breaking an enterprise scale vision into a realistic first release

Scope & Phasing
The end‑state platform covered onboarding, catalog management, dynamic pricing, inventory feeds, in‑app messaging, analytics dashboards, and more. To deliver value quickly, the roadmap had to be sliced into multi‑phase releases, with Release 1 laser‑focused on onboarding, catalog upload, and price/stock updates.

Supplier Verification
Open registration posed a reputational risk. We needed a business‑entity validation layer to ensure only legitimate companies could sell through the marketplace.

Role Complexity
Five distinct personas—Dabos Admin, Category Manager, Pricing Manager, Supplier Admin, Supplier Executive—each required granular permissions spanning millions of SKUs.

Data Diversity & Volume
A single template had to accommodate everything from purified enzymes to industrial freezers, while remaining friendly enough for less‑technical suppliers. Handling 2 million+ SKUs meant optimizing import speed, storage schema, and search performance.

Cloud Transition
All of DABOS’s legacy apps ran on‑prem. This was their first Azure deployment, raising questions around network topology, security posture, and DevOps pipelines.

In‑App Communication
E‑mail threads were unsearchable and non‑auditable. The platform needed a built‑in “mailbox” with read receipts and threaded replies—without relying on an external mail provider.

SOLUTION

A secure, Azure hosted platform built with Spring Boot & React

Discovery & Design

Over three months of collaborative workshops we converted raw requirements into user stories, wireframes, and clickable prototypes. Parallel tracks evaluated Experian’s API for business‑entity checks and mapped Azure resources for scalable storage and compute.

Key Features Delivered in Release 1

  • Supplier Self‑Onboarding – wizard‑based registration, Experian verification, role provisioning.
  • Seller Hub Dashboard – quick stats on catalog status, pending approvals, and pricing alerts.
  • Bulk Catalog Upload – drag‑and‑drop Excel/CSV; automatic schema validation; column‑mapping UI.
  • Inventory & Price Management – delta uploads or API push; historical price trend graph.
  • Messaging Center – mailbox‑style interface with rich text, attachments, read/unread tracking.
  • Admin & Manager Consoles – category performance analytics, template builder, user management.

Engineering for Usability, Security & Performance

  • UX Depth – we mirrored DABOS’s brand guidelines, added inline help, and surfaced real‑time validation errors to cut supplier frustration.
  • Data Normalization at Scale – Liquibase migrations enforce referential integrity; a rules engine standardizes units of measure and currency.
  • Large‑File Handling – chunked uploads with instant feedback; Azure Blob storage serves as transient staging before database ingestion.
  • Indexing & Query Tuning – composite indexes on SKU, supplier, category; pagination and server‑side filtering keep response times below 300 ms for 50 k‑row grids.
  • Defense‑in‑Depth – private subnets, Azure Key Vault, OWASP‑compliant input sanitation, HTTPS everywhere.
  • Observability – Prometheus metrics and Grafana dashboards flag slow queries and memory spikes early.

IMPACT

From days of spreadsheet hunting to seconds of search

Qualitative Results

  • Executive Productivity – Pricing Managers now focus on negotiating discounts instead of reconciling data.
  • Supplier Satisfaction – Faster approvals and transparent messaging have improved onboarding NPS by anecdotally “two grades.”
  • Strategic Agility – With a unified product feed, DABOS can roll out real‑time dynamic pricing and next‑day fulfillment initiatives planned for Release 2.

DABOS’s Supplier Platform has transformed the backbone of its procurement operation, unlocking a scalable foundation for global growth while giving every stakeholder—suppliers, category managers, and customers—a faster, cleaner path to scientific innovation.
